DISPATCHED FROM THE CROSSROADS, AT THE intersection OF sound & silence

The Tintinnabulation of My Ears

Finally, I had my ringing ears checked out. The result: get used to it.

The audiology showed some hearing loss in the high frequencies — nothing noticeable, not in the conversation range. Just can't hear those dog whistles like I used to.

The doc said that the ringing was caused by the hearing loss, simple as that. No infections, no other red flags. A very common affliction. I guess that's all I needed to hear — no cause for worry. The pattern suggests that the cause is noise-related: high frequencies are impaired but not the very high frequencies. Hmm... maybe it is my Hermanita's loud voice demanding attention.

I don't quite get how a reduction in ability to hear certain frequencies actually causes me to hear a faint sound. What exactly am I hearing? The sound of my soul?
