Jan. 13, 2016. [Cont'd from Jan 12] How do I stay energized? Minding my diet, my sleep, my exercise is a must. But what makes me sizzle? What makes me want to pop out of bed at 5:30 a.m. ready for work?
I've been reviewing the productive, exploratory, and infrastructure work that needs to be organized for. But new energy comes from stepping AWAY from the work, stepping OUTSIDE myself to experience the OTHER. Staying productive, always learning, ever efficient demands focus, but new energy comes from "soft eyes," an open, wide-angle view of the world larger than my treasured work space.
Travel and a few friends who are intensely involved in generative work of their own are surefire energy-boosters. Books, museums, exhibits, videos are also ways of "taking a break" in order to return invigorated.
We don't have a big trip planned for 2016 but for the first time in my life I have a garden. Last summer I got a taste of how energizing that activity is.
Along with a little drawing, I spend a lot of pointless time on photography. Sometimes it provides that needed mental break, that beauty break or whimsy break that recharges the system. An even more potent tonic comes from night photography because creeping around in the dark down to the edge of the lake carries a bit of risk. The darkness scares me a little. Cold weather adds another challenge. I re-enter our cabin pumped.
I don't know if I've laid out a strategy exactly, but these are approaches I need to remind myself of when I start feeling dreary and empty-headed.
