The pleasure of strung beads draped around our necks must be genetic – something about the labor of drilling holes in pretty bits of stone that boded well for survival. Who but the healthiest and most prosperous of ancient people had the luxury to spend days at a time with a bow drill to produce a single stone bead? Men and women who owned hundreds of beads – enough for a necklace – must have had the strongest babies -- babies who grew up knowing the value of beads.
