4.24.04 Let Them Eat Cake

Stephen Barr of the Washington Post reports:

Trying to ease the financial hardships caused by extended deployments in Iraq and Afghanistan, the House has approved legislation to allow members of the military reserves and National Guard to pull money out of their retirement savings without penalty.

Well, isn't that a nice reward for service? Let the poor fighters bleed their retirement accounts dry to pay their families' rent? Isn't there sort of a "let them eat cake" attitude here? We're punishing these young men and women by making them hang on in Iraq because of Bush administration screw-ups, then "letting" them spend their retirement accounts to support their families.
